Iconic Nite Owl drive-in has interesting quirks
It’s a sure sign of spring, Milwaukee’s drive-ins are starting to open. I’m joined by Molly Snyder of OnMilwaukee to learn more about a few of them. We’re talking about Night Owl Drive-In. What makes it so special? It is 71 years old this year, owned by one family. We are in the third-generation to own it. They do business in a really unique way. They don’t give exact opening and closing dates or months. They are open roughly from Spring Until Fall. That changes from year to year? It’s kind of around St. Patrick’s Day. They also don’t tell you what time they close. It says the close at 6:00 at night. The reality is they get their meat fresh every day. They close when they run out of meat. That could be at 2:00 in the afternoon or 4:00 or at the End of the Day. When you show up you are never 100% sure you will actually get food, which is part of the strange charm of Nite Owl. Can we talk about the food they serve? It sounds like really good burgers and fries. It is burgers, custard, fries, onion rings. You have to order it with the works because you have to get the grilled onions. They have an amazing Banana Shake. That might sound of something a little off the beaten path but it is really good. They give a good job with classic items. That is what we are looking for. No one is going there to get a healthy meal. No one is going there when they are counting calories. You got to enjoy yourself and have a nostalgia of it. It is so much fun. It is nice these restaurants are surviving considering the behavior who delivered. There’s something about hte experience of going to eat your food in your car. It is so much fun? I don’t know. Kids especially love it. It is a super different experience. There is something about it. It feels very comforting…
